Do Ductless Air Conditioners Use a Lot of Electricity?

Date: August 5, 2024

Get highly efficient home cooling for years to come.

ductless cooling Boston, MA At Cubby Oil & Energy, we’ve been keeping Boston area families comfortable for over 75 years. That is a 12-month commitment, and it can be challenging for many of this region’s older homes.

If your home was built before central air conditioning became common in the U.S., there’s a decent chance that it doesn’t have ductwork. For instance, any home that depends on a boiler system with radiators in the winter is likely to lack ducts for central A/C. Many people fall back on energy-draining, inefficient window units in the summer. But there’s a better option out there that can keep you much more comfortable while lowering your electricity costs in warm months. We’re talking about ductless air conditioners, also called ductless mini-splits. Every year, the Cubby team installs more of these systems, and we can give you a crash course on how much electricity they use.

How does ductless A/C work?

A ductless A/C system generally involves an outdoor compressor unit and one or several indoor air handlers. The indoor and outdoor components are connected via thin lines that pass through your exterior walls. Multiple air handlers can connect to a single outdoor unit.

A ductless A/C system moves heat between the inside and outside of your home. This process lowers the temperatures and the humidity of your indoor spaces.

How much electricity do ductless mini-splits use?

The amount of electricity your ductless A/C system uses will depend on how often you run it and how hot it is outside. That said, ductless mini-splits have fantastic advantages that make them more energy efficient than window units and even central A/C.

One of the most significant energy savers is “zoned” cooling. You see, each air handler of your system can function independently. This allows you to save money by running them only in certain parts of your home. A Cubby technician can work closely to choose the most efficient placement of each ductless mini-split “head” to maximize your coverage in each zone.

You also don’t need to worry about losing cooled air through leaky ducts. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), over 30% of A/C-related energy consumption comes from duct losses.

Finally, many of the ductless A/C products we sell and install also provide supplemental heating for the autumn and early winter. You’ll need to run your furnace or boiler less and save money on fuel usage.
