As we’ve previously reported, we’ve been delivering B50 Bioheat® fuel (50% biodiesel combined with 50% ultra-low-sulfur heating oil) to our customers for several years. Biodiesel is derived from organic plant matter. This spring, we completed our second heating season of a controlled study with a small group of customers and employees using B100 Bioheat fuel (100% biodiesel). We worked with the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA), oil burner manufacturers R.W. Beckett and Carlin, and boiler manufacturer Energy Kinetics to test new B100 burners, boilers and legacy equipment. The results were extremely positive in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions without sacrificing warmth or operational efficiency.
This fall, we will deliver a combination of biodiesel with renewable diesel to our test group. Renewable diesel fuel is derived from used cooking oil, animal waste fats and plant oils, but is processed in a different way. This fuel is used predominantly in transportation, reducing emissions from diesel trucks across the country. We are testing whether this fuel can be applied to the heating sector. If results are as positive as we expect, the implications will be enormous.
Our goal is to deliver a liquid renewable heating fuel that will reduce GHG emissions while keeping you comfortable in your home regardless of the weather. We believe this offers the most cost-effective, comfort-centered solution to climate change and reaching GHG emission reduction goals. While heat pump technology has improved, it remains extremely expensive to install, particularly in older homes like those fueled by oil. And it is still unclear how heat pumps will fare in very cold weather conditions.
