Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few examples of the most frequently asked questions we get. Please feel free to contact us if you didn’t see the answer to your question or if you need further details about our programs and services.

Q: How do I become a Cubby customer?

A: Please visit our Become a Customer  page and fill out the short form.

Q: How does automatic delivery work?

A: Cubby uses a computer system that calculates when you will need your next delivery, taking into account your usage history and a degree day monitoring system. Automatic delivery customers qualify for a 5-cent per gallon discount if payment is submitted within 10 days.

Q: What is “degree day monitoring”?

A: Degree day monitoring is a system used to calculate how much oil you use based on the temperature outside. For example, if the average temperature during a 24-hour period is 28° F. That temperature is subtracted from 65° F to give you a daily degree day total of 37. The higher the number of degree days, the more fuel you will use.

Q: Is there a minimum delivery amount for customers who call for their oil?

A: Customers who call in their orders must get a minimum of 100 gallons, and they must give a minimum of 24-hour notice.

Q: Do I have to be home for a delivery?

A: No. Our driver will fill your tank and leave your delivery ticket in the mailbox.

Q: Do I have to pay you in full for each delivery?

A: No. Cubby has a monthly payment plan called Smart Pay, which lets you spread out your heating costs for as long as 11 months, depending on when you enroll. There is no enrollment fee for Smart Pay.

Q: Do all companies deliver the same quality of heating oil?

A: While most do, some do not follow the high standards for quality that Cubby does. Poor quality heating oil can affect the performance of your heating system and even shorten the lifespan of your equipment. In contrast, every gallon of oil that Cubby delivers is infused with clean-burning Bioheat SuperPlus™ fuel.

Q: What is Bioheat SuperPlus™?

A: Bioheat SuperPlus™ is a blend of low or ultra-low sulfur heating oil and biodiesel, which is made from natural sources such as soybeans, other plant oils, animal fats, algae and more. Read more about Bioheat SuperPlus™

Q: Why do oil prices always change?

A: Heating oil, like gasoline and diesel fuel, is a finished product derived from crude oil, so what you pay is closely tied to the price of crude oil. U.S. production of crude oil has increased significantly in recent years, and that has contributed to lower prices. However, everything from the weather to geopolitics to speculation in the commodities market can influence oil prices on a daily basis.

Q: Is heating oil safe?

A: It’s remarkably safe. It takes an advanced high-tech burner to ignite the oil. Heating oil must first be vaporized before it will ignite or burn, eliminating any risk for explosion. There is also very little risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Q: Can I call you if I lose my heat over the weekend?

A: Yes. Cubby offers 24-hour service 365 days of the year to all of our current customers. We always have someone available to answer your call if you need help.

Q: How often should I get my heating equipment serviced?

A: Cubby recommends that you schedule a heating tune-up service once a year. Not only does this keep your system running more efficiently, it can prevent breakdowns during the colder months. Our annual tune-up is performed by our own certified oil heat technicians. Read more

Q: Does my oil heating system have a pilot light?

A: No. There is no pilot light on an oil furnace or oil boiler. This means that you are not burning any energy when your furnace or boiler isn’t producing heat.

Q: My home does not have air conditioning; can you help me add a cooling unit?

A: Yes. We offer different options to fit your needs. Please visit our Air Conditioning page.
