Maintaining the correct water level in your boiler’s tank is crucial for its efficiency and longevity. An excess of water may reduce your heating efficiency, while too little water may cause the system to overheat. To ensure optimal performance, regularly inspect the glass vial gauge on your steam boiler and adjust the water level to meet the manufacturer’s recommendations. Add or remove water as needed to achieve the ideal balance.
Air can get trapped in your home’s radiators, lowering the efficiency of your hydronic heating system. Bleeding these radiators each year can fix the problem easily. It takes little more than a minute. Find the bleed point on top of the radiator and open it. You’ll hear the trapped air escaping. Once the air is out (and water tries to escape), close the bleed point.
Sludge and sediment can accumulate in your boiler’s tank, causing inefficient operation, accelerating wear and tear and shortening its lifespan. To remedy this, shut down the boiler and open the drain valve until the discharged water runs clear. Remember to refill the tank to the appropriate level after closing the drain valve.
