Heating oil consumption naturally tapers off as seasonal temperatures climb, but it rarely stops completely — especially if your home has an oil-fired water heater that runs year-round. Cubby Oil & Energy helps customers throughout the Boston area maintain adequate heating oil levels in every season. But if you aren’t enrolled in our Automatic Delivery program, keeping a close eye on your tank gauge is essential.
Here’s what happens if your tank runs dry — and how we can make sure it never does.
Your heating oil tank has a clear glass or plastic gauge on top, marked similarly to a car’s fuel gauge — F, ¾, ½ and ¼ — with a float that rises and falls with your fuel level. When that float is sitting at the bottom of the vial or has disappeared from view entirely, your tank is empty or nearly so. As a general rule, we recommend scheduling a delivery when your gauge reads at or just above the ¼ mark. Don’t wait until it drops further.
An empty tank means an emergency fuel delivery call. On a freezing night, a loss of heat is more than an inconvenience. It can be genuinely dangerous for young children and older adults, and it puts your home at risk of frozen or burst pipes.
Once your tank is refilled, the fuel line to your burner will need to be bled of air before your system can restart properly. While this can be done yourself, we recommend letting a professional handle it.
One silver lining is that a run-out is also unlikely to cause permanent damage to your heating equipment. Still, sediment or sludge dislodged from the bottom of the tank can cause blockages — something our team can inspect and address.
A well-maintained heating oil tank isn’t just about staying warm — it’s also about protecting your equipment. Internal condensation is one of the leading causes of tank corrosion, and it becomes a much bigger problem when tanks are left sitting low or empty during warmer months.
Keeping your tank adequately filled through spring and summer slows that condensation process and extends the life of your tank.
The simplest and most reliable way to never run out of heating oil is to enroll in Cubby Oil & Energy’s Automatic Delivery program. We monitor your usage and schedule deliveries before your tank runs low — no phone calls, no gauge-watching, no risk of waking up to a cold house.
And you won’t spend more on heating oil by enrolling. We only deliver fuel when you actually need it, and you only pay for what goes into your tank.
Automatic Delivery customers are also eligible to sign up for our Capped or Fixed Oil Price Plans before winter arrives, giving you even more control over your heating costs.
