Check Your Furnace’s Air Filter in the Summer, Too!

Date: May 20, 2024

Your filter gets a workout from your central A/C in warmer months.

furnace Boston, MA When was the last time your home’s furnace clicked on? With temperatures rising in our part of New England, it’s possible you haven’t thought about your home heating equipment in a while.

But out of sight, out of mind isn’t a good policy when it comes to the air filter in your furnace. You still need to check this filter regularly in the summer and clean or replace it if it’s dirty. At Cubby Oil & Energy, we can talk you through the process, plus offer some other tips to get your HVAC system in tip-top shape for the months ahead.

What Does a Furnace Air Filter Do?

When air is circulated through your HVAC equipment — either heated or cooled — it passes first through a filter. This air filter removes pollutants that would otherwise enter your home: pollen, dust, mold, bacteria and sundry debris.

Your air filter keeps your indoor air healthy and clean, which can help your health, comfort and the cleanliness of your home. However, a dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow to and from your HVAC equipment, leading to higher energy usage and even equipment breakdowns.

Why Should You Check Your Air Filter in the Summer?

It may seem counterintuitive that you would need to check a furnace’s air filter in the summer, but this filter is still in use when your central air conditioning is running. It is still filtering circulated air, just as it does in the heating months. We recommend you check your air filters at least once a month during the peak heating and cooling seasons.

How Do You Check Your Furnace Air Filter?

You can typically find your furnace’s filter in its blower compartment, normally covered by a door or hatch. It could also be found on the return duct.

If your filter is dirty, you can clean it if it’s reusable. Disposable filters must be replaced, but this is a simple and inexpensive process. Most home stores carry these filters.
