How Much Space Can a Mini-Split Cool?

Date: August 7, 2023

Our ductless A/C products provide cost-saving zoned cooling!

ductless ac boston, ma As greater Boston’s most trusted home comfort provider, the Cubby Oil & Energy team understands that new heating and cooling equipment is not a purchase homeowners make lightly. Furnaces, boilers and air conditioning systems can be expensive. The people we work with want to be certain that the new equipment they’re getting will meet their climate control needs — efficiently and effectively.

This is absolutely the case with ductless mini-split systems, which are relatively new in the A/C landscape. Let’s break down these systems and how they can cool (and heat) your home.

What equipment does a ductless system have?

As the name suggests, ductless mini-splits do not require ductwork to cool you. Instead, the indoor air handler units and outdoor compressor connect via a thin pipe through your walls. In the summer, an indoor unit absorbs heat and expels it outside, returning cooled air to your rooms.

Incidentally, these products can also reverse this process and heat your rooms in the fall and early winter. (Customers still typically use a furnace or boiler system to stay warm in the coldest months.)

How many rooms does a ductless mini-split system cool?

Each indoor unit can cool a room, and depending on the layout of your home, that may involve a large amount of space. You should make sure that the indoor unit you select has sufficient capacity to cool the space it’s in.

Mitsubishi Electric, whose industry-best mini-splits we install, offers this helpful sizing guide for their units:

  • 9,000 Btu for 350 square feet
  • 12,000 Btu for 500 square feet
  • 18,000 Btu for 750 square feet
  • 24,000 Btu for 1,000 square feet
  • 30,000 Btu for 1,250 square feet
  • 36,000 Btu for 1,500 square feet

Happily, multiple indoor units can connect to one outdoor compressor. Today, many models connect four indoor air handling units to one outdoor unit, providing four zones of cooling.

What is zoned cooling?

Zoned cooling is one of the main advantages of ductless A/C systems. Since each indoor unit runs independently, you can have different rooms in your house at different temperatures. This allows for more energy-efficient heating and cooling, which lowers your electricity use and saves you a lot of money.
