These five tips can help you keep your energy costs down without having to sacrifice one bit of comfort.

Protect your heating system

Regular maintenance keeps your heating system in top form, allowing it to work more efficiently and saving you money on energy. A tune-up by Cubby’s certified service technicians also allows your service professional to identify and repair issues before they lead to worse efficiency, breakdowns, no-heat emergencies, and expensive repairs.

Program your thermostat properly

If you have a programmable or smart thermostat in your home, you can reduce heating costs by 10% or more. You must know how to use it to get the most out of it. Follow these two simple steps.

  • When you’re at home and awake, set the thermostat for 68°.
  • Lower temperatures by 10° for the hours you’re asleep or out of the house.

If you don’t have a programmable or smart thermostat, now is the time to upgrade. You’ll get better efficiency and some smart thermostats let you know when your furnace or boiler need service.

Pay attention to your water heater

If your water heater is set to the common manufacturer’s setting of 140° F, it is needlessly high. It’s not energy efficient, but it’s also a safety hazard. Water that hot can be scalding and pose a severe risk for infants, children, and the elderly. Lower the temperature setting to 120˚. Your water will still be hot, but you’ll cut your energy costs by up to 10%! If you have a conventional storage water heater with a tank, you can cut your water heating costs even more by adding an insulating blanket around the tank.

Do some housework

Did you know that the drafts in an average American home are comparable to leaving a window open? Invest a little money and work on caulk, weatherstripping, and expanding foam to close up those drafts. These easy tasks may save you up to 20% on your heating bills! Also, go around your home and make sure that furniture, curtains, and other objects aren’t blocking heat from the vents or radiators from reaching the rest of the room.

Let the sun heat your home for free

Open your curtains and blinds during the day to utilize solar heating. Remember to close them at night so you don’t lose all of the heat you gained during the day. This passive heating means your furnace or boiler won’t have to run as frequently.
